Public Divided on Private Drone Interception Rights in Germany

Berlin, August 11, 2026 – Following the discovery of an explosive-laden drone near Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a debate has intensified regarding how Germany can secure critical facilities in the future. A recent Forsa poll, commissioned by “Stern” and RTL, reveals a divided public opinion on whether private operators of critical infrastructure should be granted the authority to shoot down drones.

According to the survey, 51 percent of the population supports allowing private operators to intercept drones, a power currently exclusive to the police. Conversely, 44 percent of respondents oppose such a measure, while five percent remained undecided.

Regional and Political Differences Emerge

The poll highlighted significant regional differences in opinion. In East Germany, 52 percent of respondents favored increased powers for private operators, whereas only 44 percent in West Germany supported this view.

Political affiliations also played a role in shaping opinions. Supporters of the CDU/CSU (55 percent) and AfD (58 percent) were more inclined to relax the state’s monopoly on drone interception. A majority of Green Party supporters (50 percent for, 43 percent against) also voted in favor of more rights for private providers. However, sympathizers of the SPD and the Left Party showed considerably more reluctance, with 54 percent of SPD supporters and 66 percent of Left Party supporters rejecting such a proposal.

Background of the Debate

The discussion gained urgency after an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone carrying explosives was found in close proximity to Ukrainian transport aircraft. This event underscored the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to drone threats and prompted a reevaluation of existing security protocols.

Currently, only law enforcement agencies are authorized to engage and neutralize unauthorized drones. Proponents of expanding this authority to private operators argue that it would enhance the security of vital facilities, given the increasing sophistication and accessibility of drone technology. Opponents, however, express concerns about potential misuse, safety risks, and the erosion of state authority.

The Forsa poll provides a snapshot of public sentiment, indicating a complex and nuanced debate within German society regarding national security and the role of private entities in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
