Berlin Senate Unveils Enhanced Security for Critical Infrastructure After Attacks
Berlin, August 12 – The Berlin Senate will today, Wednesday, at 9:00 AM, unveil a comprehensive package of measures designed to safeguard critical infrastructure. Senator for Economic Affairs, Franziska Giffey (SPD), will present these new initiatives at the site of a September 2025 attack on the Berlin power grid in Adlershof, an incident that led to a large-scale power outage in the southeastern part of the city.
The announcement comes in response to two recent, major disruptions to Berlin’s energy supply. The first incident, on September 9, 2025, involved a nocturnal fire that severely damaged high-voltage cables in southeastern Berlin. A subsequent claim of responsibility, posted online, described the act as an assault on the Adlershof Technology Park, targeting its numerous companies and research institutions in sectors such as IT, robotics, bio- and nanotechnology, aerospace, and the security and defense industries. This attack temporarily affected approximately 50,000 private households and 2,000 commercial businesses.
The Senate Administration confirmed that security around the affected power pylon in Adlershof has since been upgraded. A new security fence with enhanced protection standards has been erected around the facility, serving as a prime example of improved infrastructure defense.
A second, even more impactful attack on the Berlin power grid occurred in January 2026. This incident targeted a cable bridge on the Teltow Canal in Lichterfelde, in the southwest of the city. Tens of thousands of households were left without electricity for several days amid freezing winter temperatures. According to the grid operator, this attack resulted in the longest power outage in post-war Berlin history.
The series of incidents has underscored the vulnerability of the city’s essential services and prompted an urgent review of existing security protocols. The new measures are expected to address these vulnerabilities by enhancing physical security, improving surveillance, and potentially implementing advanced technological safeguards to prevent future attacks.
