Okay, buckle up, because Berni the Bear just dropped some serious knowledge bombs about one of Munich’s most iconic landmarks – the Siegestor! And trust us, this isn’t just any old arch. It’s got a story that’ll make your jaw drop! 👀
What’s the Big Deal with the Siegestor?
So, Berni, our favorite furry explorer, hit up the Siegestor, which basically marks the transition from Ludwigstraße to Leopoldstraße, right by the famous Ludwig-Maximilians-University. This bad boy was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria way back in 1840 and built between 1843 and 1850. Think Roman Arch of Constantine, but make it Bavarian! 🏛️
The Mystery of the North-Facing Bavaria! 🧐
Perched on top of this stony masterpiece is a bronze sculpture of Bavaria with four lions – a Quadriga, if you wanna get fancy. And get this: they’re all looking NORTH! Why, you ask? Because back in the 19th century, that direction was mostly fields and meadows. But here’s the kicker: Bavarian soldiers used to return home from battle from the north. So, Bavaria was literally welcoming them home! How cool is that?! That’s why you’ll find the inscription “To the Bavarian Army” on the arch. Talk about a warm welcome! 👋
From War-Torn to Peace Symbol! 🕊️
Fast forward to WWII, and the Siegestor, along with its Quadriga, got seriously messed up. But guess what? By the 1972 Olympic Summer Games in Munich, the restored sculpture was back in its rightful place! And since the end of the war, the south side of the arch proudly displays the inscription: “Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, admonishing to peace.” Chills, right?!
