Major Civil-Military Exercise ‘Red Storm Charlie’ Planned for Hamburg
Hamburg, August 16 – The city of Hamburg is set to host another large-scale civil-military exercise, dubbed “Red Storm Charlie,” from September 24 to 26. This drill will see the Bundeswehr collaborating with various Hamburg authorities, aid organizations, and private companies to prepare for potential emergencies.
Extensive Scenarios and Participants
The exercise will encompass a range of realistic scenarios across different parts of the city. These include simulated helicopter flights and military vehicle convoys. Participants will also practice responses to critical incidents such as widespread power outages, chemical accidents, and the mass casualty management of numerous injured individuals simultaneously.
Approximately 500 soldiers from the Bundeswehr, alongside personnel from around 60 different organizations, are slated to participate. This year’s exercise marks the third consecutive year of the “Red Storm” series in Hamburg. In parallel with the military exercise, the Chamber of Commerce announced that approximately 150 Hamburg companies will engage in their own crisis simulations on September 24 as part of “Red Storm Business.” These corporate drills will focus on scenarios such as power outages and cyberattacks, highlighting a comprehensive approach to emergency preparedness across the city’s public and private sectors.
The previous “Red Storm Bravo” exercise, which concluded last year, was noted as the largest defense exercise in Hamburg since the Cold War. Despite its scale, it also saw counter-demonstrations in the city center, indicating public engagement and discussion surrounding these preparedness efforts.
