Berlin, August 18, 2026 – As the summer holidays draw to a close, travel to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is being impacted by significant S-Bahn construction work. Since the early morning hours, S-Bahn services between Schöneweide, Baumschulenweg, and Treptower Park have been suspended. This disruption is expected to continue until the early morning of August 31st, as announced by the S-Bahn online.
Regional Trains Recommended for BER Travelers
Travelers heading to or from BER are strongly advised to utilize regional train services, such as the Airport Express (FEX). Several S-Bahn lines are affected by these construction activities, including the S75, which operates further north.
Extensive Construction Work on S-Bahn Network
For the affected section between Schöneweide, Baumschulenweg, and Treptower Park/Neukölln, two replacement bus lines have been implemented to mitigate the impact on commuters. The extensive closures are necessary to continue work on the new electronic interlocking system in Schöneweide.
According to the S-Bahn, this new interlocking system will replace several older signal boxes along the route that currently require on-site operation. This section is the last remaining part of the S-Bahn network not yet directly connected to the operations center in Halensee. “The remote control from there has the advantage that traffic no longer has to be stopped if all local personnel are unavailable,” stated the S-Bahn.
Impact on Travelers and Alternative Routes
The timing of these disruptions, just before the end of the summer holidays, is particularly inconvenient for many travelers. Passengers are urged to plan their journeys carefully and allow for extra travel time. Information on specific alternative routes and bus schedules can be found on the official S-Bahn website and at major train stations.
The S-Bahn emphasizes that these upgrades are crucial for modernizing the network and improving operational efficiency and reliability in the long term. Once completed, the new electronic interlocking system is expected to enhance the overall travel experience for S-Bahn passengers in Berlin.
Local news outlets and public transport authorities continue to provide updates on the situation, and travelers are encouraged to check these sources regularly before embarking on their journeys to or from BER Airport.
