Munich CSU Demands Action on Overheated Public Transport
Munich, August 18 – The Christian Social Union (CSU) in Munich’s city council is calling for immediate action to improve air conditioning in the city’s buses and trams. Following weeks of high temperatures that left public transport vehicles sweltering, the CSU warns of significant health risks for passengers.
The demand comes after numerous complaints from commuters who experienced inadequate cooling during the recent heatwaves. The CSU highlights that the current air conditioning systems are not sufficiently robust to cope with tropical heat conditions, leading to uncomfortable and potentially dangerous environments for passengers.
Health Risks in Overheated Vehicles
Andreas Babor, a CSU city council member, emphasized the severity of the issue. “This is not a luxury problem,” Babor stated. “Overheated vehicles pose a health risk. Seniors and young children suffer particularly in the heat, and people with cardiovascular diseases are acutely endangered.”
The CSU’s motion specifically requests that the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), Munich’s public transport company, retrofit its buses and trams with adequately dimensioned air conditioning systems wherever possible and necessary. Furthermore, the party insists that sufficient cooling capacity be a key consideration for all new vehicle procurements.
The party argues that access to reliable and comfortable public transport should be a given, even during summer months. “Anyone who relies on public transport must be able to use it without hesitation, even in summer,” Babor added. “In a city of millions, it should be a matter of course that the air conditioning in public transport works.”
MVG’s Response Deemed “Unacceptable”
Babor expressed strong disapproval of previous statements from the MVG suggesting that better cooling in buses was not feasible. “Statements from the MVG that better cooling of buses is not possible are unacceptable to us,” he asserted. “Summers will continue to get longer and hotter in Munich. The MVG must be prepared for this and upgrade technically.”
The CSU’s initiative underscores a growing concern among Munich residents regarding the impact of climate change and the need for urban infrastructure to adapt. With increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves, the comfort and safety of public transport users have become a pressing issue for local politicians.
The party’s proposal aims to ensure that public transport remains a viable and attractive option for all citizens, particularly those who are most vulnerable to extreme temperatures. By investing in improved air conditioning, the CSU believes the MVG can enhance passenger well-being and encourage continued use of sustainable transport methods.
The MVG has yet to issue an official response to the CSU’s latest demands.
