Munich Swifts Begin Southern Migration After Challenging Breeding Season
Munich, August 18 – The swift population of Munich has largely commenced its annual migration to African wintering grounds, concluding a breeding season marked by significant challenges, primarily extreme heatwaves. Stefanie Gansbühler, a building-nesting bird expert at the Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz (LBV) Munich, provided an assessment of the 2026 season, highlighting both early returns and substantial losses among young birds.
Gansbühler noted, “Although we observed many returning swifts from Africa in Munich during spring, the prolonged summer heat led to considerable losses among the young birds.” This statement underscores the severe impact of climatic conditions on the local swift population.
Conservation Concerns Amidst Ongoing Construction
Despite most adult swifts having departed, Gansbühler issued a caution regarding ongoing construction activities in Munich. “Even though the majority of swifts have already left, some young are still being cared for under certain roofs,” she emphasized. This highlights the continued need for vigilance to protect remaining swift nests during this transitional period.
Silence Descends on Munich as Swifts Depart
For bird enthusiasts in Munich, the city has grown noticeably quieter. The distinctive, loud “Sri Sri” calls that characterized groups of up to twenty swifts soaring through city streets in early August are now largely absent. Gansbühler, who has dedicated many years to studying these unique birds, confirmed, “A large portion of Munich’s swifts are already on their return journey towards Africa, where they will overwinter south of the equator.”
The fascination with swifts stems from their remarkable lifestyle; they spend almost their entire lives in the air, including sleeping, mating, and feeding. However, swift populations across Germany are experiencing a significant decline. This is primarily due to the loss of nesting opportunities in buildings and a scarcity of food, as these birds are exclusively insectivorous.
Climate Change and the Phenomenon of “Heat Jumpers”
This year, climate change posed a substantial threat to these agile flyers. “During the main breeding season, we experienced two prolonged heatwaves. Temperatures of up to 70 degrees Celsius were recorded at swift nesting sites directly under roofs,” explained the LBV expert. “Many young birds succumbed to the high temperatures. Others attempted to escape the heat, becoming what we call ‘heat jumpers.’ These fledglings leave their nests prematurely, even though they are not yet capable of flight.”
Fortunately, attentive citizens brought numerous such young birds to rescue centers, including the Munich Animal Shelter, where they receive professional care until they can be released back into the wild. This community effort has been crucial in mitigating some of the losses caused by the extreme weather.
The LBV continues to monitor the swift population and advocate for measures to protect their nesting sites and ensure a stable food supply. The challenging 2026 breeding season serves as a stark reminder of the increasing pressures faced by urban wildlife due to climate change and habitat loss.
