Police Incident in Munich-Schwabing: Man Seriously Injured After Being Shot

Munich, August 18 – A man was seriously injured after being shot by police in the Schwabing district of Munich. The approximately 20-year-old man was taken to the hospital. The incident occurred after police responded to reports of a man brandishing a pistol-like object in the street.

Timeline of Events and Police Response

The initial emergency call was received by the police around 5:15 PM, reporting a man handling a pistol-like object on a public street. A witness also reported hearing a shot. Officers located the man around 5:30 PM and approached him, leading to the use of a firearm by the police.

A police spokesperson stated, “When we receive a report of a person with a weapon, we deploy with strong forces.” The police confirmed that there was no prior criminal act before the shooting. The exact sequence of events and why the shot was fired are currently under investigation.

Investigation by the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office

The Criminal Police and forensic teams have arrived at the scene, along with officers from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA). The LKA routinely investigates incidents where police officers use their firearms. The pistol-like object has been secured and is being examined to determine if it was a real weapon.

The identity of the man remains unknown as no identification documents were found on him. It is expected to take until Wednesday to identify him. The officers directly involved in the operation are receiving support.

Extensive Cordons and Traffic Disruptions

The area around the incident, at the corner of Clemensstraße and Belgradstraße, was extensively cordoned off for several hours. This also affected tram services, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the busy area. Witnesses were questioned directly at the scene, and a collection point for witnesses was set up.

Broader Context of Recent Incidents in Munich

This incident follows other recent events in Munich. Earlier on August 18, an Airbus A380 of Lufthansa touched down too early at Munich Airport, causing damage to runway lighting, though no injuries were reported. Additionally, FC Bayern star Jamal Musiala suffered another collapse, posting a diagnosis on Instagram shortly after. These events highlight a busy period for news and emergency services in the region.
