Scholz’s Hamburg Apartment: Taxpayer-Funded Security Upgrades Raise Questions
The secondary apartment of former Hamburg Mayor and ex-Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in Hamburg-Altona has become a point of contention for the Taxpayers’ Association. Following criticism over the substantial personnel costs for its surveillance, the apartment is now undergoing further, expensive upgrades.
Delayed Installation and Shifting Responsibilities
Special security windows, acquired five years ago, are only now being installed, apparently with considerable effort. Sascha Mummenhoff of the Taxpayers’ Association questions the timing and decision-making process, asking who authorized it and who is footing the bill.
The Bundestag administration, responsible for the matter, has labeled it “classified information,” citing security measures for a private residence – despite Scholz only renting the property. The Federal Chancellery initially planned the window security, but when Scholz transitioned to a regular member of the Bundestag, responsibility shifted, reportedly delaying the installation of the bulletproof windows.
Construction Underway and Unanswered Questions
Police have confirmed that Scholz’s Altona residence will be scaffolded for construction work by the end of August. The installation of these specialized windows is complex and requires additional security. Funds for this, according to the Bundestag press office, are allocated from federal budgetary resources.
However, critical questions remain unanswered. The Hamburg State Association of the Taxpayers’ Association highlights that inquiries regarding Olaf Scholz’s involvement in the decision-making process for the window installation have gone unaddressed by his office. Furthermore, questions about the ownership of these publicly funded windows post-installation, whether they will permanently transfer to the private property owner, and if financial compensation is planned, have also received no response from Scholz’s office.
Comparisons to Past Controversies and Ongoing Criticism
The Taxpayers’ Association draws parallels between this measure and the controversial renovation of former Mayor Christoph Ahlhaus’s (CDU) villa, where security enhancements costing millions were paid for with taxpayer money.
This latest development follows previous criticism regarding the continuous surveillance of Scholz’s apartment. Despite the former Chancellor rarely occupying the residence – his primary residence being in Potsdam – tens of thousands of police personnel hours have accumulated for its round-the-clock monitoring. This constant surveillance has been a significant burden on taxpayers, prompting calls for consequences from the police union.
