German Authorities Uncover Alleged Russian Assassination Plot Near Berlin

Berlin, August 22, 2026 – German security authorities have uncovered a cache of handguns and ammunition in a forest near Berlin, which they suspect was intended for assassinations on behalf of Russian intelligence, according to reports released on Friday. The discovery has prompted a high-level investigation, with one suspect already arrested in Romania.

Suspect Arrested in Romania, Extradition Sought

The daily Süddeutsche Zeitung and public broadcasters NDR and WDR reported that a suspect was apprehended in Romania. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed that German authorities are in contact with their Romanian counterparts regarding the suspect’s potential extradition to Germany. “This case demonstrates that we are operating under a high threat level,” Dobrindt told reporters, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Espionage and Violent Attack Suspicions

Minister Dobrindt confirmed media reports that the suspect, detained in Romania last year, is under investigation for espionage and planning a violent attack that endangers the state. While Dobrindt did not directly comment on claims that the weapons were specifically for targeted killings by Russian intelligence, he stated that authorities could not rule out the involvement of foreign powers. The minister also refrained from disclosing the suspect’s identity but indicated that the individual is linked to planned parcel bomb attacks in Romania. “We will then determine, in the course of the investigation, what measures can be taken against this person,” Dobrindt added.

Dobrindt characterized the suspect as a “low-level agent,” suggesting a lack of awareness regarding the full chain of command above them. He further noted that other operatives, including a Kazakh citizen, have been detained this year under similar circumstances, indicating a broader network of uninformed agents.

Weapons Found and Surveillance Efforts

The arms cache discovered near Berlin contained two pistols and ammunition. German news agency dpa reported that the pistols showed signs of having been placed there on behalf of Russia’s intelligence services. Police disabled the handguns but left them at the site, which was then placed under surveillance for several months. However, no one was observed approaching the stash, leading investigators to presume that the alleged perpetrators were aware of the police discovery and avoided the location.

Germany a “Daily Target of Hybrid Warfare”

While Interior Minister Dobrindt has refrained from directly confirming Russia’s involvement in this specific case, he previously stated this month that Germany is a “daily target of hybrid warfare.” He elaborated, “Espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, or covert operations by foreign powers aimed at destabilizing Germany or inflicting direct harm are a constant reality.”

These remarks followed the discovery of an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig Airport. Some German lawmakers have pointed to Russia in connection with the drone incident, and US media reports indicated that American intelligence services also suspected Russian involvement. Russia, however, has vehemently rejected these allegations, labeling them a “hastily fabricated provocation” and part of a “new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany.” The Russian embassy in Berlin further asserted that the incident “only serves the interests of Kyiv and the militarist wing of the European political class.”

The ongoing investigation into the Berlin arms cache underscores the heightened security concerns in Germany regarding foreign interference and potential threats to national security.
