New Women’s Shelter with 46 Beds Opens in Berlin
Berlin, August 24 – A new women’s shelter with 16 family places has been opened in Berlin. The facility provides a total of 46 beds for women and their children, as announced by the social administration. The first residents have already begun to move in. The Berliner Stadtmission is the operator of the new shelter, and its address remains confidential for security reasons.
This new addition brings the total number of women’s shelters in Berlin to ten. The capital now offers accommodation for 419 families in women’s shelters and refuge apartments, totaling 921 beds for women and children. An eleventh shelter is expected to open in September, according to the administration.
Berlin’s Commitment to Protecting Victims of Violence
“Affected women can rely on us to help them,” stated Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe. She emphasized that the Violence Aid Act clearly mandates that every woman affected by violence receives prompt and reliable protection and support. “With the opening of a total of three new women’s shelters and two additional specialized counseling centers this year, we are continuously expanding Berlin’s support system for women.” A new women’s and children’s protection house had already been opened in January.
Rising Numbers of Domestic Violence Victims
According to data from the police and the Senate, there were more than 13,000 victims of domestic violence in 2025. Additionally, 8,652 sexual offenses were recorded, including nearly 1,400 rapes. The police acknowledge that these figures likely represent a significant underreporting, as many women experiencing violence from husbands or partners do not come forward or file complaints.
Berlin is allocating over 45 million Euros this year for violence protection and women’s support. This figure is projected to increase to 53.5 million Euros in 2027, with 10 million Euros coming from the federal government. The annual operating cost for one of these new women’s shelters, with approximately 50 beds, is around 1.5 million Euros.
