School Start for Thousands of First Graders in Hamburg
Hamburg, August 25, 2026 – Today, thousands of girls and boys in Hamburg are experiencing their first day of school, marked by new school bags, cones filled with treats, and considerable excitement. The majority of these new students have been enrolled in schools of their choice.
Approximately 17,000 first graders are taking their places in classrooms across the city, a number only 36 fewer than the previous year. While some schools commenced enrollment as early as Monday or over the weekend, nearly 230 children were redirected to schools they had not initially chosen. This situation has been a source of stress for the affected families.
Around 800 First Grade Classes Commence
The annual distribution of students represents a significant logistical challenge for the education authorities. Around 800 classes must be filled in a manner that prevents them from being either too large or too small. In Hamburg, parents exercise their right to free school choice with considerable enthusiasm, as noted by authority spokesperson Peter Albrecht. He stated that it is a substantial annual challenge to “fulfill as many school wishes as possible, while simultaneously making good use of the available space in schools” and adhering to the legally mandated small class sizes.
The elementary school in Cranz, located in the southwest of the city, recorded the fewest enrollments with 17 first graders. The schools in Altengamme-Deich and Mittlerer Landweg in Billwerder each have 23 first graders.
Largest Schools Accommodate Six First Grade Classes
Conversely, the largest schools have established six first grade classes to accommodate all students. These include the Sternschanze all-day elementary school, the Neugraben elementary school, and the school at Gartenstadt in Wandsbek.
Concurrently, more than 10,000 children are entering preschool today. The authorities anticipate a decline in student numbers starting from 2029. However, “peaks” in demand are still expected in certain districts and schools. In highly sought-after schools, enrollments are prioritized based on the length of the commute. Another significant factor is whether a child already has siblings attending the school.
No Additional Teacher Positions in Hamburg Until 2028
According to the school authorities, no additional teacher positions will be created in Hamburg until the end of 2028. Instead, an expansion of social work services in elementary schools is planned.
Criticism of Planned Austerity Measures
Due to the “difficult budgetary situation,” future plans include larger classes, fewer substitute teachers, and cuts in school support services. This comes at a time when Hamburg is experiencing its highest student numbers in 45 years. The new school year begins this week with more students and teachers, but also with the prospect of larger classes due to cost-cutting measures.
