Munich’s Iconic Fish Fountain Back in Operation with Timer
Munich, August 25 – The renowned Fish Fountain at Marienplatz in Munich is flowing again. After a comprehensive upgrade with a timer aimed at reducing water consumption, the city’s building department has turned the fountain back on. The measure is part of broader efforts to manage water usage in the Bavarian capital.
Fountain Now Operates Only During Daytime Hours
Effective immediately, the fountain will no longer operate around the clock but will run for 12 hours daily, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This change comes after the Fish Fountain, along with nine other major ornamental fountains in the city, was shut down in early July. Operating hours for more than 50 other fountains in the state capital were also reduced. The objective of these measures was to decrease water consumption by nearly half during the recent heatwave.
Ornamental Fountains to Be Retrofitted for Reduced Water Consumption
At the time, the city council also decided to retrofit at least 30 high-water-consuming ornamental fountains across the city with measurement, control, and regulation technology. The Fish Fountain marks the beginning of this initiative.
Strict Water Regulations in Munich Not Extended
In the interim, strict water consumption regulations were in effect in the Bavarian capital. Since mid-July, these general regulations prohibited activities such as watering lawns, washing cars outside of car washes, and operating private pools. The reason for these measures was the increased water consumption. According to Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens), the resources of Munich’s water supply were "extremely strained" after a dry winter and spring.
These restrictions were not extended beyond August 1, as water consumption had reportedly decreased, according to Munich’s municipal utilities (SWM).

The decision to implement water-saving measures came on June 30, 2026, when Munich’s Mayor Dominik Krause initiated emergency measures to conserve water following a record heatwave and exceptionally high drinking water consumption.
