Munich’s Tram-Westtangente Receives Full Approval, Construction to Begin
Munich, August 26, 2026 – The city of Munich has announced that all necessary permits for the construction of the Tram-Westtangente have been secured. The Munich public transport company (MVG) confirmed that the government of Upper Bavaria has issued the planning approval decision for the second construction phase, which covers the section from Waldfriedhof to Aidenbachstraße. This milestone ensures that the entire project now has the required authorisations to proceed with its implementation.
Full Approval for Tram-Westtangente – Second Section Extends to Aidenbachstraße
The initial planning approval for the first section, spanning from Romanplatz to the Waldfriedhof loop, was granted on September 4, 2023. With the latest decision, the entire route is now approved. The future tram line will connect five city districts in western Munich: Nymphenburg (Romanplatz), Laim (Fürstenrieder Straße), Sendling-Westpark, Hadern, and Obersendling (Aidenbachstraße U-Bahn station). This new connection will integrate various existing U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus lines, significantly enhancing public transportation in the region.
Preparatory Construction Measures to Start in Autumn
Preparatory construction activities are slated to begin in October 2026. These initial works will include the installation of temporary street lighting, the expansion of the central median, and the erection of tree protection fences. Following these, drainage work is expected to commence in January 2027, with the main track and road construction scheduled to start in July 2027.
Public Information Event for Residents Planned
An informational event for local residents is planned for autumn or winter 2026. Georg Dunkel, Head of Mobility, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress, acknowledging the potential disruptions that construction in a densely populated area might cause. Alex Indra, Head of Major Mobility Projects, highlighted that the comprehensive approval provides essential planning security for the subsequent phases of work.
New Tram Line 14 Already a Visible Result
A tangible outcome of the first planning approval section is the operational Tram Line 14, which already runs on a segment of the future Tram-Westtangente, offering additional connections to commuters. With the full approval of the second section, the project now enters its next critical phase. The MVG views the new tram connection as a vital contribution to improving mobility in Munich’s western districts.
