Wind Power Fraudster Escapes From Berlin Prison

Berlin, August 28 – Convicted fraudster Hendrick Holt is currently at large after failing to return to a Berlin prison following an authorised leave. Holt, who was serving a nine-year sentence for selling non-existent wind farms, is now the subject of an intensive manhunt.

The Osnabrück public prosecutor’s office confirmed the escape, stating, “There is now evidence suggesting that he escaped.” The 36-year-old was expected to return to the prison complex on August 28 but did not. Authorities have launched a full-scale search operation.

Holt’s Alleged Moscow Sighting and Past Crimes

Reports from NDR indicate that Holt may have fled to Moscow. An Instagram account, purportedly belonging to Holt, recently posted a picture with the caption: “Greetings from Moscow, very beautiful here, the caviar is fantastic.” This social media activity is being investigated as part of the ongoing search.

Holt was initially arrested in 2020 at the prestigious Hotel Adlon in Berlin. In 2022, the Osnabrück Regional Court sentenced him to a total of almost nine years in prison following multiple trials. His convictions included charges of organised fraud, bribery, and forgery, primarily stemming from his scheme of selling fraudulent wind farm investments.

Controversial Airport Purchase from Prison

Adding another layer to Holt’s complex legal history, Die Welt reported this month that he allegedly used intermediaries to purchase Rostock-Laage Airport for €3.1 million while still incarcerated. The extent of Holt’s personal financial contribution to this acquisition remains unclear, and he is currently facing insolvency proceedings related to this transaction.

The escape has raised questions about the security protocols for prisoners on authorised leave and the oversight of their activities, even while serving sentences for significant financial crimes. The Berlin authorities have not yet released further details regarding the nature of the authorised leave granted to Holt.

The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any information regarding Holt’s whereabouts to the police. The investigation into the circumstances of his escape and his current location is ongoing.
