Munich, September 1 – The Munich Tafel, a crucial institution supporting over 22,000 people in need with fresh food weekly, has issued an urgent warning against a new donation scam. Reports indicate that fraudsters are actively collecting cash donations in public spaces, including Munich’s popular biergartens and restaurants, falsely claiming to represent the organization.
Fake Collectors Impersonate Munich Tafel Staff
According to Steffen Horak, press spokesman for the Munich Tafel, the scam came to light when several donors contacted the organization inquiring about promised donation receipts. “We became aware of the scheme when several donors called us asking about the promised donation receipt,” Horak stated. The known incidents have occurred in the Augustiner Biergarten and various establishments in the Glockenbachviertel, though Horak suspects a higher number of unreported cases.
These imposters are described as polite, well-dressed, and fluent in German. They approach individuals at tables and in public areas, presenting fake Munich Tafel IDs and carrying clipboards. Under the guise of sending a donation confirmation, they collect personal data, including names and addresses, from unsuspecting donors.
Double Deception: Cash and Personal Data Stolen
This scam not only defrauds individuals of their money but also compromises their personal information. The fraudsters exploit the trust of donors by promising official receipts and then using the collected data for unknown purposes.
Munich Tafel Never Collects Cash in Public
Horak explicitly clarified that the Munich Tafel does not conduct cash collections on the streets or in public establishments and does not issue collector IDs for such purposes. “With the fake documents and their very correct demeanor, the fraudsters apparently gained the necessary access and trust of the staff in the restaurants,” Horak added, highlighting the sophistication of the scam.
The organization urges the public to be vigilant. If approached by individuals requesting cash donations on behalf of the Munich Tafel, do not give them money. Instead, if possible, inform the local staff or contact the police.
