Berlin’s ‘THE KNAST’ Opens: A Night in a Former Prison Cell Transformed into a Boutique Hotel
Berlin, September 4, 2026 – What was once a place of confinement for women will soon become a unique destination for travelers seeking an extraordinary experience. On September 15, 2026, the former women’s prison in Berlin-Lichterfelde will officially open its doors as ‘THE KNAST,’ a boutique hotel offering guests the chance to spend a night in a reimagined prison cell.
The cultural hub ‘THE KNAST’ is expanding its concept to include nine ‘cell rooms’ located on the first and second floors of the right cell block. To create these unique accommodations, two to four historical cells have been combined, resulting in rooms ranging from approximately 13 to 30 square meters.
Preserving the Past, Embracing the Present
While the building’s past is being transformed, its history will not be erased. On the contrary, several original details will remain, serving as conscious reminders of the building’s former purpose. Historic bolts and now-covered peepholes on the original cell doors have been preserved and integrated into the new interior design.
However, instead of bunk beds and austere prison furnishings, guests will find custom-made furniture, dark tones, and metal accents. The former anthracite color scheme of the prison is also incorporated, alongside a characteristic wine-red, which adds a sensual, almost boudoir-like atmosphere to the hotel.
Hotel Rooms as Art Stages
Art plays a significant role in ‘THE KNAST’s’ concept. The rooms will feature rotating works by local artists. For the grand opening, pieces by Anne Bengard will be displayed, exploring themes such as intimacy, desire, and fetishization.
For those desiring more spacious accommodations, four additional suites with individual layouts and special features are currently being developed on the top floor. These suites are designed for longer stays, special occasions, or for guests seeking an experience beyond a typical city hotel.
Beyond the Cell: Fine Dining and Exclusive Experiences
The concept of ‘THE KNAST’ extends beyond just overnight stays. The hotel’s restaurant will host fine-dining evenings, intimate dinners for two, and various events. A bar complements the culinary offerings, while the expansive garden provides a tranquil contrast to the historic interiors.
Discretion is a key aspect of the hotel’s philosophy. ‘THE KNAST’ caters exclusively to adults and to “guests who want to make their visit to Berlin more exciting or end their date night imaginatively,” according to CEO Janina Atmadi. This unique approach aims to provide an unforgettable and sophisticated experience for its clientele.
