Berlin Launches ‘metro_polis berlin’ to Boost Public Transport Dialogue and Social Cohesion

Berlin, 5 September – The Berlin boroughs of Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg have initiated a new dialogue project, ‘metro_polis berlin’, aimed at fostering community engagement and political participation within the city’s public transport network. This initiative, which commenced on September 4th, will see trained facilitators engaging passengers in conversations on selected tram and S-Bahn lines until December 2026.

The project, announced by the district offices of both boroughs, seeks to strengthen social cohesion and provide a new platform for political participation in everyday life. The discussions will begin with the question: “A neighbourhood worth living in: what do you need to be able to live well and happily here?”

‘metro_polis berlin’: A New Approach to Citizen Engagement

The ‘metro_polis berlin’ project will specifically operate on tram lines M5, M6, and M17, as well as on S-Bahn lines 5, 7, and 75. Facilitators, trained for this specific role, will be present on these routes, actively inviting passengers to participate in discussions. The goal is to gather insights and perspectives directly from the commuters who use these services daily, ensuring a grassroots approach to urban development and community well-being.

According to the district office, the findings from these dialogues will be meticulously documented and subsequently fed back to both administrative bodies and political representatives. This direct channel of communication aims to ensure that citizen concerns and ideas are heard and considered in policy-making and urban planning.

Strengthening Social Cohesion and Political Participation

The core objective of ‘metro_polis berlin’ extends beyond mere data collection. It is designed to strengthen the social fabric of the community by encouraging open dialogue and mutual understanding among residents. By creating spaces for conversation in everyday settings like public transport, the project hopes to bridge gaps between citizens and local governance, making political participation more accessible and integrated into daily life.

This initiative represents an innovative approach to urban development, acknowledging the importance of public spaces, including transport networks, as venues for civic engagement. It aims to empower residents by giving them a direct voice in shaping their neighbourhoods and the city as a whole.

Project Timeline and Future Impact

The ‘metro_polis berlin’ project will run until December 2026. The period will allow for extensive data gathering and a comprehensive understanding of the needs and aspirations of the residents of Marzahn-Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg.

The success of this pilot project could potentially lead to its expansion to other boroughs in Berlin, offering a scalable model for fostering citizen participation and enhancing the liveability of urban environments. The emphasis on direct engagement and the integration of feedback into administrative and political processes highlights a commitment to more responsive and community-driven governance.

The initiative also serves as a reminder of the vital role public transport plays not just in mobility, but also as a communal space where diverse perspectives can converge and contribute to the collective good of the city.
