Munich Airport Expands Offerings with New Direct Route to Alghero, Sardinia

Munich, September 8, 2026 – Passengers at Munich Airport can look forward to a new direct flight connection to the popular holiday island of Sardinia. Discover Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, announced the launch of flights to Alghero, located in the northwest of the Mediterranean island, starting in June 2027. This new route will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.

Discover Airlines Expands Italian Portfolio

The announcement by Discover Airlines, made in early September, highlights the airline’s continued expansion of its Italian network. “Following the announcement of new destinations in Northern Europe and Great Britain, Discover Airlines is also further expanding its offering in Italy in summer 2027: The leisure airline is launching flights from Munich to Alghero for the first time,” stated the airline in a press release. This addition complements the Lufthansa Group’s existing Sardinian destinations from Munich, which include Olbia and Cagliari, providing travelers with direct access to a new region of the island.

The flight duration to Alghero is expected to be less than two hours, making it an attractive option for a quick getaway. Alghero, a charming city on the northwest coast, is known for its historic center, beautiful beaches, and Catalan heritage.

Increased Connectivity for Munich Travelers

The introduction of the Alghero route signifies Munich Airport’s ongoing efforts to enhance its portfolio of direct flight connections. The new service will commence in June 2027, offering travelers more flexibility and choice for their summer holidays. The twice-weekly schedule is designed to accommodate both short breaks and longer stays on the island.

This development comes amidst a dynamic period for air travel in Europe. While overall air traffic in Europe continues to grow despite geopolitical challenges, specific regional airports are experiencing varied fortunes. Munich Airport continues to be a key hub for international and leisure travel, and this new route further solidifies its position as a gateway to popular European destinations.

The addition of Alghero to the flight schedule demonstrates Discover Airlines’ commitment to expanding its leisure offerings and providing diverse travel options for passengers departing from Munich.
