Yahoo Updates Privacy Settings for European Users

Yahoo has rolled out updated privacy settings for its European users, focusing on enhanced control over cookie usage and data collection. The changes, detailed in Yahoo’s Cookie Policy, allow users to specify their preferences regarding how their information is utilized across Yahoo’s websites and applications.

New Cookie Consent Options for European Users

The updated framework addresses how cookies and similar technologies (such as web storage) are used to store and read information on users’ devices. This includes data collection for providing services, authenticating users, ensuring security, preventing spam and misuse, and measuring website and app usage.

Users are now presented with clearer choices: ‘Accept All’ or ‘Reject All’ cookies. Opting for ‘Accept All’ grants Yahoo and its 252 IAB Transparency & Consent Framework partners permission to store and access information on a device. This includes using precise location data, technical identifiers (system-generated strings of letters and numbers like browser cookies, device IDs, and IP addresses), and browsing and search data for analytics, personalized advertising and content, measurement of ad and content performance, audience research, and offer development and improvement.

Managing Your Privacy Preferences

For those who wish to customize their choices, a ‘Manage Privacy Settings’ option is available. This allows users to fine-tune their consent for various data processing purposes. Yahoo emphasizes that consent can be withdrawn or settings changed at any time by accessing the ‘Privacy and Cookie Settings’ or ‘Privacy Dashboard’ links on its websites and apps.

The company’s Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy provide further details on how personal data is used. This move by Yahoo reflects a broader industry trend towards greater transparency and user control over personal data, particularly within the European Union’s stringent privacy regulations.

Impact on User Experience and Data Collection

These changes mean that users will encounter new consent prompts when accessing Yahoo services in Europe. While the aim is to empower users, it also places the onus on individuals to actively manage their data preferences.

The data collected in an aggregated form, such as the number of visitors, device type (iOS or Android), browser used, and time spent on websites and apps, will continue to be used for measurement purposes and will not be linked to individual users, unless specific consent is given for personalized data usage.

The implementation of these updated privacy settings underscores the ongoing commitment to data protection and user autonomy in the digital landscape. Users are encouraged to review the updated policies and adjust their settings according to their comfort level with data sharing and personalization.
