Munich’s U-Bahn lines U3 and U6 have resumed full service across the city as of Saturday, September 19, much to the relief of Oktoberfest visitors and daily commuters. This reinstatement of regular service follows the successful completion of the first phase of renovation work at the Poccistraße and Goetheplatz U-Bahn stations, as announced by the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG).
Upcoming U-Bahn Restrictions: October 5 – November 27
While the current reprieve is welcome, a new phase of restrictions will commence on Monday, October 5, and is scheduled to last until November 27. During this period, only one track between Goetheplatz and Implerstraße will be closed, allowing the section to remain operational on a single track. However, this will still lead to significant service adjustments:
- U3 Service: The U3 line will be interrupted between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße.
- U6 Service: The U6 line will be out of service only between Goetheplatz and Implerstraße.
To mitigate the impact on passengers, the MVG will implement the following alternative transport options:
- Shuttle Train: A shuttle train will operate between Implerstraße and Goetheplatz.
- Replacement Buses: Replacement buses will run along the affected routes, following the same paths as in previous construction phases.
Completed Renovation Works at Poccistraße and Goetheplatz
The first phase of renovations, successfully completed by Stadtwerke München (SWM), involved extensive work at both affected stations:
- Poccistraße Station:
- Hazardous material remediation across 5000 square meters.
- Shell construction work in the operating rooms.
- Replacement of approximately 200 lamps and several kilometers of cables.
- Repainting of walls, ceilings, and the northern staircase across approximately 4000 square meters.
- Installation of more than 20 new fire protection doors.
- Mounting of four steel supports in the tunnel for structural reinforcement.
- Goetheplatz Station:
- Renovation of ceilings and walls.
- Reinforcement of the reinforced concrete support structure on one platform side.
- Surface cleaning of approximately 2200 square meters using high-pressure water jets (up to 3000 bar).
- Re-coating of surfaces with approximately 240 tons of shotcrete.
Future Construction Phases and Timelines
Following the upcoming restrictions, there will be a suspension of closures:
- Sperrpause (Closure Break): From November 28 to April 11, U3 and U6 will run regularly throughout the Advent season and winter.
The third and final phase of restrictions is then scheduled from April 12 to August 1, 2027. During this period, the MVG anticipates that all tracks will again be occupied by scaffolding, transport trains, and other equipment, leading to the same operational concept as in the first phase of restrictions.
Information for Affected Passengers
Passengers traveling between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße (U3) or between Goetheplatz and Implerstraße (U6) are particularly affected. The MVG advises:
- U3 Passengers: Switch to the U3 replacement bus in the affected section.
- U6 Passengers: Utilize the shuttle train operating between Goetheplatz and Implerstraße.
The MVG confirms that all renovation work at Poccistraße and Goetheplatz stations remains on schedule.
