S2 Returns to Altona After Bridge Repairs
Since the summer of 2025, a damaged railway bridge near Holstenstraße has only been passable in one direction. This bridge is crucial for S-Bahn trains transitioning from the Dammtor route into Altona station. As a result, the S2 line, after stopping at Holstenstraße, was diverted to Diebsteich instead of continuing to Altona. Deutsche Bahn has now promised an end to this diversion this winter, though a specific date has not yet been set. The timetable change in mid-December is a likely possibility.
The Role of the S7 Line
To maintain connections to Altona during the bridge repairs, the S7 S-Bahn line was introduced in December 2025. This line operated from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, via Jungfernstieg and Landungsbrücken, to Altona. On its return journey, it used the single-direction bridge to Holstenstraße, and from there, returned to Dammtor. This temporary solution proved vital in mitigating the impact of the bridge damage on passenger services.

A temporary bridge is expected to be installed at Holstenstraße by the end of 2026. According to Deutsche Bahn, significant preliminary work has already been completed, with the pillars and bearings now in place.
