Hamburg Breaks Ground on New Greenhouse in Klein Flottbek
Hamburg, September 25 – A new chapter for Hamburg’s botanical treasures began on Friday with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for a new greenhouse in Klein Flottbek. Science Senator Maryam Blumenthal (Greens) and University President Hauke Heekeren initiated the construction of the facility, which will serve as a temporary home for the diverse plant collection from Planten un Blomen.
Interim Home for Planten un Blomen’s Exotic Flora
The greenhouses in Planten un Blomen have been closed for several years, awaiting extensive renovation. During this period, thousands of tropical and subtropical plants will be relocated to the new interim greenhouse in the Botanical Garden in Klein Flottbek. This crucial project ensures the preservation of these valuable botanical specimens during the renovation phase.
The construction of the new interim greenhouse is estimated to cost 15 million Euros and is projected to be completed in approximately two years. This significant investment underscores Hamburg’s commitment to its natural heritage and public green spaces.

Officials anticipate that the renovation of the Planten un Blomen greenhouses will take four to five years to complete.
