Munich, Bavaria – The Munich Panthers have commenced their 2026/27 Regional League season, marking another step in their audacious plan to establish professional handball in the Bavarian capital. The club, which launched its season last weekend, harbors a vision of ascending to a new league each year, a goal that, while ambitious, is underpinned by a robust structure, clear vision, and a strong squad.
A Dream Born from Passion: Bringing Professional Handball to Munich
Years ago, former national handball players Dominik Klein and Steffen Weinhold, alongside former top athlete Lisa Bieberbach, embarked on a mission to bring professional handball to Munich. The city has repeatedly demonstrated its keen interest in handball, evident in its enthusiastic reception of international matches and the Supercup. However, fans wishing to watch Bundesliga handball currently have to travel to Erlangen.
To change this, the trio founded Handballgemeinschaft München (HG München) in 2025. This organization works in close cooperation with the Handballcampus München, also established by Dominik Klein, which aims to inspire children to take up the sport.
Olympic Park Dreams and Local Talent
HG München is not only focused on youth development but also on making a significant impact in the adult league. Their ultimate dream is to host home games in the iconic Olympic Park, featuring a team brimming with local Munich talent. The Olympiahalle has already hosted World Championship games, and the state-of-the-art SAP Garden is set to be a venue for the Supercup and the German national team during the preliminary rounds of the 2027 World Championship.
Fusion with TuS Fürstenfeldbruck: A Strategic Alliance
With the vision firmly in place, the next crucial step was to secure strong handball support. Klein, Weinhold, and Bieberbach found this in TuS Fürstenfeldbruck, affectionately known as the Brucker Panther. For years, TuS Fürstenfeldbruck has been the flagship of handball in Southern Bavaria, even spending a season in the 2. Bundesliga in 2020/21. Following a restructuring, the club, after years in the third division, moved into the Regional League last season.
The merger between HG München and TuS Fürstenfeldbruck is a strategic move designed to accelerate the ambitious goals of the Munich Panthers.
