Siemens Mobility Unveils New Piccadilly Line Trains at InnoTrans Berlin
Berlin, September 28, 2026 – Siemens Mobility and Transport for London (TfL) officially unveiled the new Inspiro London Piccadilly line train at the Piccadilly Showcase Event during the InnoTrans exhibition in Berlin yesterday. This presentation offered attendees a comprehensive look at the innovative features and passenger-focused enhancements set to redefine future journeys on London’s Piccadilly line.
A Glimpse into London’s Future Commute
Following addresses from key figures including Siemens Mobility Chief Executive Officer Michael Peter, Transport for London Commissioner Andy Lord, and Aglaja Schneider, Joint CEO of Siemens Mobility UK&I, visitors were invited aboard the impressive 113-meter-long, nine-car train. The guided tour highlighted the advanced design and technological integrations aimed at improving travel for millions of commuters.
Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner, emphasized the transformative impact of these new trains. “These new trains will fundamentally change the experience of travelling on the Piccadilly line when they start entering service. They will become one of the first things an international visitor will experience when they come to London, be it through Heathrow or St Pancras International, and will be more energy efficient and spacious, provide CCTV and air conditioning and give customers better information during their journeys. Journeys will be more accessible, safer and faster, and the experience for our customers will be transformed.”
Enhanced Passenger Experience and Operational Efficiency
The new Piccadilly line trains are engineered to significantly enhance the passenger experience. Key features include air-conditioning, walk-through carriages, improved accessibility, onboard CCTV, and advanced digital information systems. Beyond passenger comfort, these trains promise greater operational efficiency, boasting increased reliability, a 10% boost in capacity, and a 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to the current fleet.
A significant innovation is the digital connectivity of the trains via Siemens Mobility’s Railigent platform. This system enables trains to transmit live location data and critical component health data directly to TfL’s depots, facilitating predictive maintenance and ensuring optimal performance and reliability across the network.
Commitment to UK Manufacturing and Innovation
Aglaja Schneider, Joint CEO and Managing Director, Rolling Stock and Customer Services at Siemens Mobility UK&I, expressed immense pride in the project. “I’m incredibly proud to see the new Piccadilly line train exhibited at InnoTrans. Having been part of this programme earlier in its development as the project director, it’s fantastic to see how far the project has come and to share that progress with the wider rail industry.”
She further acknowledged the collaborative efforts between Siemens Mobility and Transport for London, stating, “I would like to thank the teams across Siemens Mobility and Transport for London for their hard work and collaboration. From design and manufacturing through to testing, teams from both organisations have worked side by side to bring the project to life. Built at our Goole Rail Village in East Yorkshire, it also represents our continued investment in UK manufacturing and skills.”
Notably, 80% of Transport for London’s order for 94 new Piccadilly line trains is being manufactured at Siemens Mobility’s state-of-the-art £240 million Goole Rail Village in the UK, underscoring a significant investment in British manufacturing and job creation.
Showcasing Digital Rail Solutions
In addition to the new trains, Siemens Mobility utilized the InnoTrans exhibition to showcase its comprehensive portfolio of digitally connected rail solutions. This included Railigent X, Signaling X, and Mobility Software Suite X. These technologies, powered by Siemens Xcelerator, are designed to assist operators in optimizing performance, enhancing reliability, and making more efficient use of rail infrastructure, thereby supporting the development of a more efficient and sustainable railway system.
The exhibition in Berlin served as a crucial platform for Siemens Mobility to demonstrate its commitment to innovation in the rail industry, presenting solutions that are set to revolutionize urban transport and contribute to a more sustainable future.
