Emotional Farewell for Damir Kreilach at Stadion Kantrida
Rijeka, September 29, 2026 – Damir Kreilach, a midfielder cherished by both his home club HNK Rijeka and 1. FC Union Berlin, received a passionate farewell match on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The event took place at the historic Stadion Kantrida, drawing a significant crowd and creating a memorable atmosphere for the long-serving player. The match saw HNK Rijeka face 1. FC Union Berlin, symbolizing Kreilach’s deep connection to both teams.
A Career Spanning Continents and Hearts
Kreilach joined 1. FC Union Berlin in the summer of 2013 from HNK Rijeka, quickly becoming a pivotal figure for the German club with his dedication and passion. Over five years, he played 157 competitive matches for Union Berlin before his departure in 2018. His contributions earned him immense respect in both Berlin and Rijeka, making him a true legend for both fan bases. The recent international break provided the perfect opportunity for Union Berlin to travel to Croatia and participate in this special tribute.
Stadion Kantrida: A Venue Steeped in History
The choice of Stadion Kantrida as the venue for the farewell match added a unique charm to the event. Nestled directly on the Adriatic coast and partially built into a rock face, the stadium boasts a truly special ambiance. For decades, it served as HNK Rijeka’s home ground since its construction in 1912. Although HNK Rijeka now plays its home matches at Stadion Rujevica since 2015, Kantrida remains a beloved and iconic landmark. Just in July, Austria Salzburg also played a match there against NK Opatija, attracting hundreds of fans to Croatia for the experience.
Union Berlin Fans Create a Spectacle
Approximately 1,000 Union Berlin supporters made the journey to Rijeka, many taking advantage of the stadium’s coastal location to spend time by the sea before the match. The fans brought with them two smaller fence banners, two large travel banners, “Eisern Union” flags, and an impressive visual display in honor of Kreilach. This included a large block banner featuring his likeness, which was prominently displayed in the stand. The visual spectacle was accompanied by loud chants and repeated use of pyrotechnics, highlighting the fervent support for their former player.
Armada Rijeka’s “West Side Story” Choreo
The home side, represented by Armada Rijeka 1987, was equally active in their support. They presented a captivating choreo under the theme “West Side Story,” also incorporating numerous pyrotechnics throughout the evening. On the pitch, a screen was used to further honor Damir Kreilach, the star of the night, adding to the emotional tributes.
A Fitting Farewell: From Kick-off to Final Walk
The match kicked off at 7:17 PM, a symbolic time chosen because Kreilach wore the number 19 for Union Berlin and 17 for Rijeka during his playing career. For this special occasion, he once again played for both teams, a testament to his enduring connection to both clubs. Towards the end of the match, Kreilach walked off the field through a guard of honor formed by players from both teams, marking a truly dignified and emotional conclusion to the evening. Kreilach is currently active as a loan player manager for Rijeka, continuing his involvement with the club he started his professional career with.
