Hamburg Doctor Sentenced for Cancer Drug Fraud
Hamburg, September 29 – The Hamburg Regional Court on Tuesday sentenced a doctor to a prison term for fraud involving expensive cancer medications. He had been channeling prescriptions for high-priced drugs to a pharmacist for years in exchange for money.
The court sentenced the doctor to a total of four and a half years in prison for bribery and gang-related fraud in connection with expensive cancer medications. Additionally, the court ordered the confiscation of illicit gains amounting to nearly 972,000 Euros from the 65-year-old, a spokeswoman confirmed. The prison sentence includes penalties from a previous case.
Nearly One Million Euros Received
According to the court’s conviction, the oncologist from Reinbek had an agreement with a pharmacist from Harburg: the doctor would channel prescriptions for the preparation of high-priced cancer drugs – known as cytostatics – to the pharmacist. In return, the doctor received money, totaling almost one million Euros over the years. A similar arrangement also existed with a business consultant who had connections to a pharmacy in Aschaffenburg.
Business Consultant Receives Suspended Sentence
The 66-year-old business consultant was already sentenced last week by the chamber in a separate proceeding to an eleven-month suspended prison sentence for bribery in the healthcare sector. Both judgments are not yet legally binding. The case against the Harburg pharmacist was closed in July against payment of a fine.
The case highlights a significant breach of trust within the healthcare system, with the doctor exploiting his position for substantial personal financial gain at the expense of ethical medical practice. The long-standing nature of the scheme underscores the need for stringent oversight and accountability in the prescription and dispensing of high-cost medications.
