Munich’s Traditional Feuerzangenbowle Returns to Isartor Courtyard

Munich, October 11, 2026 – One of Munich’s most cherished winter traditions, the “Münchner Feuerzangenbowle,” is set to return to its historical location in the courtyard of the Isartor. After two years at an alternative venue, the event will once again transform the medieval gate into a festive winter wonderland from November 23, 2026, to January 6, 2027. This marks the tenth anniversary of the event, which promises its customary blend of warmth, romance, and winter cheer, right in the heart of the city and close to the Old Town.

A Return to Tradition and Atmosphere

The return to the Isartor is highly anticipated by many Munich residents. The historic walls, flickering cauldron fires, and the distinctive aroma of rum, sugar, and hot punch create a unique and atmospheric setting that has become an integral part of the winter festive season for many. Visitors can look forward to escaping the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoying a hot cup of Feuerzangenbowle in this special ambiance.

Special Offer for Seniors and a Thought-Provoking Exhibition

This year, the organizers are once again offering a special “Seniors’ Mug.” Individuals aged 66 and over can purchase a cup of hot Feuerzangenbowle for 4€ upon presentation of their ID throughout the entire event period. This initiative aims to make the event accessible to a wider audience.

In addition to the festive drinks, the event will host a free exhibition titled “Da bin I dahoam, da kim I her” (This is where I belong, this is where I come from). Developed in collaboration with the GeschichtsWerkstatt Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt im Verein Münchner Stadtteilgeschichte e.V., the exhibition addresses the topical issue of migration. Through images and texts displayed on a flatscreen, it offers insights into the history of immigration to Munich, inviting visitors to reflect on questions of origin and home. The exhibition will be accessible for the entire duration of the event.

The Genesis of a Munich Winter Staple

The idea for the giant cauldron of Feuerzangenbowle originated in the early 2000s with two Munich residents, Hartmut Senkel and Jan Oltznauer. They envisioned a massive vessel filled with the finest Feuerzangenbowle. Since such equipment was not readily available, everything, from the hand-forged cauldron to the fire pit and the dispensing system, was custom-made. This dedication to craftsmanship ensures the unique quality of the Feuerzangenbowle itself, a fragrant blend of wine, rum, cinnamon, oranges, and spices, specially created for this event. Guests can also expect a variety of culinary delights. As dusk falls, the entire event will be bathed in atmospheric lighting, enhancing the festive experience.

Extended Festive Season

Unlike many other winter attractions, the Munich Feuerzangenbowle does not conclude at Christmas. It will remain open until January 6, 2027, allowing Munich residents and visitors to celebrate the New Year outdoors under the festive glow of the Feuerzangenbowle.

Opening Hours and Location

The event will operate with the following opening hours:

  • Monday – Friday: 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • Saturday: 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM
  • Sunday: 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM
