Dangerous Animals: 160 Venomous Snakes Live in Hamburg
Hamburg, May 24 – Lions, crocodiles, or giant snakes frequently make headlines, especially during summer months, when these supposed pets escape. Just a few days ago, police officers shot a tiger near Leipzig. In Hamburg, owning such “dangerous animals” requires a permit.
As of November 2025, approximately 160 venomous snakes live in Hamburg. According to the responsible Justice Authority, around two dozen owners have the appropriate permit. A particularly high number of venomous snakes are found in Rahlstedt, Bramfeld, and Hummelsbüttel. Additionally, a dangerous spider is located in Heimfeld, and large lizards in Stellingen.
Permits Required for Certain Animals
Permits are also necessary for some scorpions and giant snakes, as well as for big cats, bears, primates, wolves, and hyenas. These permits are only granted to individuals who can demonstrate expert knowledge and provide safe and species-appropriate housing. The authorities can inspect these conditions at any time if needed.
No Known Escapes in Hamburg
Anyone who keeps dangerous animals without a permit faces a fine of up to 50,000 euros. If people are endangered by these animals, it can even lead to imprisonment. The Hamburg Dangerous Animal Act has been in effect since 2013. Since then, according to the authorities, no case of a dangerous animal escaping has been reported.
