1860 Munich’s Promotion Hopes Dented by Late Duisburg Goal
Munich, March 23 – TSV 1860 Munich experienced another significant setback in the 3. Liga promotion race, losing 1-2 to direct rival MSV Duisburg due to a late goal. This defeat widens the gap between the Munich club and the promotion play-off spot to five points. Last week, TSV 1860 Munich only managed a 0-0 draw against Wiesbaden.
Match Details: Bitter Defeat for the ‘Lions’
After falling behind to a goal from Joshua Bitter in the 60th minute, 1860 captain Thore Jacobsen equalized from a penalty kick in the 69th minute. However, in an intense final phase, MSV player Thilo Töpken sealed the victory for Duisburg with a rebound in the 90th minute, much to the frustration of the visitors. To make matters worse, Jacobsen received a yellow-red card for repeated fouling and will be unavailable for 1860 after the international break.
Coach Kauczinski: ‘We Weren’t Cool Enough’
“We definitely weren’t the worse team today,” said Kevin Volland to Magentasport. The veteran striker had hit the post in the first half. Coach Markus Kauczinski also commented, “We played a good game.” However, he attributed the missed opportunity for a win to too many turnovers after the break. “We weren’t cool enough,” the coach stated, referring to the conceded goals.
The loss marks a challenging period for 1860 Munich as they strive for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. The team will now need to regroup during the international break and come back stronger to reignite their promotion ambitions.
