Hamburg, December 23 – Book lovers in Hamburg can breathe a sigh of relief this Christmas, as 20 of the city’s 32 public libraries will keep their doors open, either fully or partially, throughout the festive period. This initiative aims to ensure continuous access to reading materials for residents during the holidays.

Flexibibs: Unstaffed Access for Cardholders

A significant number of these libraries will operate under their normal opening hours, utilizing the ‘Flexibib’ system. Flexibibs are flexible libraries that grant adult cardholders access to books and reading facilities even in the absence of library staff. This system allows for extended and convenient access to resources, particularly beneficial during holiday periods when traditional staffing might be limited.

Limited Opening Hours at Select Locations

While the majority will offer extended access, four branches-Altona, Niendorf, Volksdorf, and Winterhude-will have restricted opening hours. These locations will be open until midday on December 24th but will remain closed for the rest of the Christmas holidays.

Branches Closed for Christmas

Residents relying on the following branches will need to plan accordingly, as these libraries will be closed for the Christmas break: the Central Library, along with branches in Barmbek, Bergedorf, Bramfeld, Eidelstedt, Eimsbüttel, Fuhlsbüttel, Harburg, Holstenstraße, Horn, Mümmelmannsberg, Neuallermöhe, Steilshoop, and Wandsbek. Patrons of these branches are encouraged to utilize one of the open Flexibib locations or stock up on reading material beforehand.

Ensuring Continued Access to Literature

The decision to keep a substantial number of libraries open underscores the city’s commitment to promoting literacy and providing cultural resources to its citizens, even during major holidays. The Flexibib system, in particular, highlights an innovative approach to public service, adapting to modern needs for flexible and accessible community resources.

This arrangement ensures that those who might run out of reading material over the holidays, or simply wish to enjoy a quiet moment with a book, will have ample opportunities to do so across Hamburg.
