4,000 Tons of Potatoes to be Given Away for Free in Berlin to Prevent Waste
Berlin, January 14 – An extraordinary initiative is underway in Berlin to prevent the waste of 4,000 tons of potatoes from a farm in Saxony. The project, a collaboration between Berliner Morgenpost and Ecosia, aims to distribute these potatoes for free to Berlin residents, highlighting what the Berliner Morgenpost describes as “a story about the absurdities of our food system.”
The Genesis of a Surplus
The massive potato surplus originated from a farm south of Leipzig, where a trader had initially ordered the harvest. However, after the potatoes were harvested and stored, the market experienced an oversupply, causing prices to fall. Despite financial settlements being made, the 4,000 tons of potatoes remained, facing the threat of going to waste.
To put this quantity into perspective, 4,000 tons is equivalent to nearly four million kilograms or the weight of 800 adult elephants. This colossal amount of produce, if stacked, would reach the height of Berlin’s TV Tower and could potentially feed hundreds of thousands of people.
A Collaborative Effort to Combat Waste
The first truckload of these potatoes, which have been meticulously stored in cool, dry halls, is now en route to Berlin. Ecosia is providing crucial financial support for the transport of the potatoes from Saxony to Berlin, while the Berliner Morgenpost is taking the lead in organizing the free distribution to the public.
The primary goal of this joint venture is to rescue the entire 4,000 tons of potatoes from being discarded. The registration period for individuals wishing to collect free potatoes has now closed. Today, January 14, those who successfully registered will receive an email notification regarding the acceptance or rejection of their application. Accepted applicants will also receive detailed information about the collection date, approximate time, and location.
How to Still Contribute
Even though individual registration for collection is closed, the project is still seeking public support. The Berliner Morgenpost is actively looking for additional distribution points across Berlin to facilitate the widespread giveaway of the potatoes. Furthermore, financial donations are being accepted to cover the costs of transporting additional truckloads of potatoes to the city.
