44 Cats Rescued from Munich Apartment Amidst Overwhelmed Family Situation

Munich, February 5 – Forty-four cats, including newborns and pregnant animals, have been rescued from an apartment in Munich due to untenable conditions. The operation, conducted by the veterinary office and animal welfare officers, led to the animals being brought to a local animal shelter, as confirmed by a police spokesperson and the Munich Animal Welfare Association.

Overwhelmed Family and Uncontrolled Breeding

According to the Animal Welfare Association, the condition of the 95-square-meter apartment and the animals indicated that the family keeping them was overwhelmed. The situation came to light in the autumn of 2025 when an individual purchased a young cat online that appeared malnourished and unkempt. Investigations by the Animal Welfare Association at the cat’s former home revealed 28 cats living in cramped conditions. The presence of multiple unneutered male cats and young animals of varying ages pointed to uncontrolled breeding, prompting the animal welfare officers to involve the veterinary office.

Over several months, efforts were made to improve the situation by neutering male cats. However, four kittens reportedly showed signs of inbreeding and had to be euthanized at an animal clinic due to severe symptoms.

Police Intervention and Further Discoveries

In late January 2026, police searched the apartment for an unrelated reason. During the search, officers discovered more animals than previously known and informed the veterinary office. Subsequently, a total of 44 cats were captured with the help of the Animal Welfare Association and transported to the Munich Animal Shelter.

The Munich Animal Welfare Association stated on Facebook that “several young animals again showed neurological failures, and malformed fetuses were found.”

Future for the Family and the Rescued Cats

The family is expected to face a ban on keeping animals, according to the Animal Welfare Association. The extent to which the police are investigating potential violations of animal welfare laws remains unclear at this time.

The rescued cats are currently being cared for at the Munich Animal Shelter. They are to be placed with responsible owners once they are healthy enough and have been spayed or neutered.

This incident highlights the challenges associated with animal hoarding and the critical role of animal welfare organizations and authorities in intervening in such situations. The case also serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the prevention of uncontrolled animal breeding.

Further information on the “Allgäu Animal Scandal” and other related cases in Bavaria indicates a broader issue of animal welfare concerns in the region.
