A7 and Elbe Tunnel Partial Closure: Traffic Chaos Expected in Hamburg

Hamburg, May 9, 2026 – The A7 motorway southbound between Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld, including the Elbe Tunnel, will be partially closed from today, Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 6:00 AM until Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 7:00 PM. The ADAC warns of massive traffic chaos due to the simultaneous start of the holidays and the Hafengeburtstag (Port Anniversary).

Significant Restrictions for Southbound Traffic

The closure affects the A7 in the southbound direction between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions for a total of 37 hours. Northbound traffic on the A7 will not be affected. However, the southbound junctions Hamburg-Stellingen, -Volkspark, -Bahrenfeld, -Othmarschen, -Waltershof, -Hausbruch, and -Heimfeld will be closed from 5:00 AM on Saturday.

ADAC Criticizes Timing of Closure

The German automobile club ADAC has expressed little understanding for the decision to close the A7 at the same time as the start of the holidays and the Hafengeburtstag. “Long traffic jams and delays are unavoidable,” stated an ADAC spokesperson. “Especially the A7 north of the Elbe Tunnel, but also the A1 around the Maschener Kreuz and the Norderelbbrücke, as well as the diversion routes, will be heavily burdened.”

Traffic Already Heavy on Friday

Traffic around Hamburg was already unusually heavy on Friday, according to the police traffic control center. A spokesperson speculated that some road users might have tried to pass through before the closure. Additionally, work on the guardrails at the Norderelbbrücke temporarily reduced the number of lanes to two out of three per direction. At times, traffic on the A1 was backed up from the south to the Maschener Kreuz and from the north to the Hamburg-Ost junction. On the A7, cars were queuing in the direction of Flensburg from Hamburg-Heimfeld and in the direction of Hanover from Schnelsen-Nord.

Diversion Routes Recommended

Motorists approaching from the north are advised to bypass the construction site extensively. A diversion route via the B205, A21, and A1 is available from the Neumünster-Süd junction.

Construction Work on Altona Noise Barrier Tunnel

The reason for the closure is construction work on the noise barrier tunnel in Altona, as announced by Autobahn GmbH. This includes the concreting of a tunnel block and the installation and wiring of traffic sign gantries in preparation for the commissioning of the western tube. There is also construction work south of the Elbe Tunnel.

Closure Reduced Due to Hafengeburtstag

Originally, a full closure of the A7 from Friday to Monday was planned for this period. However, Autobahn GmbH Nord stated that the closure was reduced out of consideration for the Hafengeburtstag, now spanning from Saturday to Sunday and only in one direction. A complete waiver was not possible due to other upcoming construction sites, leading to this compromise.

Further A7 Closures in 2026

  • June 12-15, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona tunnel lid)
  • June 26-29, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure – without Elbe Tunnel (including integration of the Schnelsen tunnel control center)
  • September 11-14, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the Altona tunnel lid, work on the tunnel control center)
  • September 25-28, 2026: A7 55-hour full closure (including work on the K20 elevated road)

Hafengeburtstag: Other Road Closures in Hamburg

Due to the 837th Hamburg Hafengeburtstag starting on Friday, roads between Altona and Speicherstadt will also be closed.
