Hamburg, September 1st – The extensive construction work on the A7 motorway in Hamburg-Waltershof is nearing completion. However, before the final handover, a significant closure will impact southbound traffic this weekend. The A7 will be completely closed in the direction of Hanover.
A7 Southbound Closure: Stellingen to Heimfeld, Including Elbtunnel
The closure of the A7 southbound carriageway, heading towards Hanover, is scheduled to begin on Friday at 10 PM. The affected section spans from the Hamburg-Stellingen junction to the Hamburg-Heimfeld junction, encompassing the critical Elbtunnel. The closure will remain in effect until Monday morning at 5 AM. Furthermore, the on-ramps at Hamburg-Volkspark, -Bahrenfeld, -Othmarschen, -Waltershof, -Hausbruch, and -Heimfeld will close an hour earlier, starting at 9 PM on Friday.
Elbmarsch Elevated Road Nears Completion
This weekend’s closure is essential to allow Autobahn GmbH to carry out the final works on the Elbmarsch elevated road. This crucial infrastructure project is expected to be fully completed and opened to the public by the end of September.
Extensive Diversions for Southbound Traffic
Motorists traveling southbound during the closure will need to follow extensive diversions. A wide-ranging alternative route will be available via the A1, A21, and B205. For those approaching from the north, drivers will be directed onto the B205 from the Neumünster-Süd junction. It is important to note that large and heavy-duty transports must bypass the A7 southbound over a wide area, as passage through the affected section will not be possible.
A7 Widening: Six Years of Work for Eight Lanes
The vision of eight lanes south of the Elbtunnel is set to become a reality this September. For six years, DEGES, the federal highway planning agency, has been working on widening the A7 between the Elbtunnel and Hamburg-Hausbruch. This project involved extending Germany’s longest motorway bridge by one lane in each direction. The Elbmarsch elevated road itself stretches 3.8 kilometers and is supported by hundreds of concrete stilts.
Expansion of the Elevated Motorway
During the original construction of the elevated motorway in the 1960s, space was deliberately left between the two parallel carriageway bridges. This foresight allowed for the addition of two new lanes in this central section. To bring these new lanes into operation, the elevated road now requires final acceptance and an adjustment of the traffic management system.
