A96 in Munich-Laim Closed: Detour Routes for Drivers

Munich, June 7 – The A96 motorway at the Munich-Laim junction has been completely closed in both directions since Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at 10 PM. The closure, which is due to the demolition of the Fürstenrieder Straße bridge, is expected to continue until Monday, June 8, 2026, at 5 AM, according to the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes.

Detour Routes for Motorists

Drivers are advised to be aware of the following detour routes:

  • Inbound (towards city center): Traffic will be diverted via the Blumenau junction and then directed along Waldwiesenstraße and Würmtalstraße to Fürstenrieder Straße or Waldfriedhofstraße, leading towards the Mittlerer Ring.
  • Outbound (towards Lindau): Drivers wishing to access the A96 in the direction of Lindau will be redirected from Wednesday at the Mittlerer Ring (coming from Sendling Westpark) via Waldfriedhofstraße and Würmtalstraße to the Blumenau junction. From Schwanthalerhöhe, traffic will be routed via Tübingerstraße and Westendstraße to Fürstenrieder Straße, and from there along Würmtalstraße to the Blumenau junction.

Hotel Stays for Affected Residents During Bridge Demolition

The Autobahn GmbH states that the measure is taking place during the Whitsun holidays to minimize traffic disruptions. To ensure the A96 can be reopened by Monday morning’s rush hour, work on the Fürstenrieder Straße bridge demolition will continue around the clock, including on the public holiday and throughout the weekend.

While apologizing to affected residents for the noise caused by the construction work, the Autobahn GmbH emphasized, “Not carrying out these works is also not an alternative.” For individuals living in the vicinity of the construction site, Stadtwerke München is offering hotel accommodations during the demolition. Affected residents have been informed by post.

Tram-Westtangente Project: Bridge Demolition Begins

The bridge demolition and planned renewal are part of the Tram-Westtangente project, which is being jointly implemented by the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes and Stadtwerke München. According to Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG), the new tram line will connect five city districts: Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Laim, Hadern, Sendling-Westpark, and Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln.

The route will be 8.3 kilometers long and include 17 stops. This will expand the current 82-kilometer tram network by approximately ten percent.

The traffic restrictions and construction work are crucial steps in developing Munich’s infrastructure, aiming to improve both road and public transport networks for the future.
