Activists Occupy Spiegel Magazine Foyer in Hamburg

Hamburg, January 30 – Approximately 20 to 30 activists briefly occupied the foyer of the Hamburg-based “Spiegel” magazine on Friday morning. The protest, organized by the “RiseUp4Rojava” alliance, lasted for about an hour and aimed to criticize the magazine’s coverage of the situation in northern and eastern Syria.

Criticism of Spiegel’s Syria Coverage

The “RiseUp4Rojava” alliance accuses “Spiegel” of ignoring the international legal situation in the Kurdish autonomous region of Rojava, located in northeastern Syria, among other issues. According to the activists, the magazine’s reporting fails to adequately represent the complexities and perspectives of the region.

A spokesperson for “Spiegel” confirmed the occupation and stated that the magazine has offered to hold a meeting with the activists in the coming weeks to discuss their concerns. The incident took place at the prominent building on Ericusgraben.

Details of the Protest

The occupation began on Friday morning and concluded within approximately one hour. Eyewitnesses reported a peaceful demonstration, with activists displaying banners and chanting slogans related to their cause. No damage or arrests were reported during the incident.

The “RiseUp4Rojava” alliance has been vocal in its advocacy for the Kurdish region of Rojava, highlighting humanitarian and political issues in the area. Their protest at the “Spiegel” headquarters underscores their efforts to draw media attention to their concerns.

Spiegel’s Response and Future Dialogue

The offer of a meeting from “Spiegel” indicates a willingness to engage with the activists’ criticisms. The exact date for this meeting has not yet been disclosed, but it is expected to take place within the next few weeks. This dialogue could potentially lead to a better understanding of the issues raised by “RiseUp4Rojava” and influence future reporting on the region.

The protest was reported by NDR 90,3 in its “NDR 90,3 Aktuell” program on January 30, 2026, at 17:00.
