Munich is set to experience significant traffic disruptions on Sunday, June 14, 2026, as the ADFC (General German Bicycle Club) Munich organizes its annual bicycle demonstration, dubbed the ‘Radsternfahrt.’ The event aims to highlight the urgent need for improved cycling safety and infrastructure, particularly for children. This comprehensive guide provides all essential information regarding the demonstration, including routes, traffic restrictions, and the ADFC’s key demands.

Why the ADFC is Demonstrating: Demands for Safer Cycling

Under the motto “The Future Rides a Bike,” the ADFC Munich is calling for safer and better cycling conditions. Andreas Schön, the first chairman of ADFC Munich, emphasizes the importance of well-developed cycling infrastructure for children’s development. “Only with a well-developed cycling infrastructure can children learn to ride a bike carefree at an early age. Pedaling themselves, cycling to school, and finally doing the first rounds with friends – these are milestones in children’s development. Even the youngest must be able to cycle naturally and safely,” Schön states.

The demonstration is prompted by statistics showing that unsafe road conditions are the biggest deterrent for people to use their bicycles, and the proportion of cyclists among all traffic victims is increasing.

Key Demands from ADFC Munich:

  • Safe, car-separated bike paths.
  • Seamless bike path networks without dangerous interruptions.
  • Protected intersections that children can cross safely.
  • Wide bike paths for families to cycle side-by-side.
  • Clear pedestrian and bike paths free from illegally parked vehicles.
  • Speed limit of 30 km/h as the standard in the city.
  • Clearly visible and safe school bike routes.
  • Car-free zones in front of schools and kindergartens.
  • More space for bikes instead of parked cars.

Who Can Participate?

  • Children under 14 years old must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
  • Pedestrians, skateboarders, or individuals on other transport devices are not permitted to join the processions.
  • Cyclists joining the motorway sections must be able to maintain a speed of at least 12 kilometers per hour.
  • Dogs are generally not allowed.

Participants are encouraged to visit the ADFC website for detailed rules and procedures for the ‘Radsternfahrt.’

Demonstration Schedule and Routes

The ADFC reports that a total of 14 demonstration convoys will be escorted by the police. Starting points are distributed throughout Munich and the wider metropolitan region, with varying route lengths. Participants can join any convoy at their convenience. All routes will converge, culminating in a joint arrival at Königsplatz, where a stage program, including music, will begin at approximately 3:30 PM. The demonstration is expected to conclude around 5:00 PM.

For the first time, Munich’s Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) will participate, joining one of the convoys and delivering a welcoming speech at the final rally.

Traffic Impacts and Road Closures

Motorists should anticipate significant restrictions and closures throughout Munich and surrounding areas due to the multiple demonstration convoys on June 14. All convoys will be police-escorted, and the ADFC states that the processions will remain compact.

Crucially, the Mittlerer Ring and Leopoldstraße will be closed to motor vehicle traffic, as cyclists will also be demonstrating on these key arteries. For a precise overview of all demonstration routes, interested parties should consult the ADFC’s official website.
