Hamburg, June 15 – The cult beer brand Astra and its advertising agency Philipp und Keuntje (PUK) have officially ended their 27-year collaboration. This decision brings to a close one of Germany’s most recognizable advertising campaigns, known for its distinctive red heart anchor logo and the cheeky slogan ‘Was dagegen?’ (Any objections?). The separation was first reported by the industry magazine ‘Campaign Germany’.

A Partnership That Defined a Brand

Astra was PUK’s very first client in late 1998. Over the subsequent decades, the agency played a pivotal role in shaping Astra’s brand identity, making its humor and slogans famous far beyond Hamburg’s city limits. The iconic red heart anchor, now synonymous with Astra, was also developed during this successful partnership. The campaign garnered numerous awards throughout its run.

The End of an Era: A Long-Anticipated Split

To mark the farewell, PUK released a film and a retrospective showcasing their most famous advertising motifs. All 100 of these motifs are now available for viewing on the agency’s website. The separation had been anticipated for some time; talks of ending the collaboration first emerged in autumn 2024 but were extended. Now, the final decision has been made.

Astra has announced its intention to work with other agencies in the future. However, it is currently unknown whether discussions with potential successors are already underway.

Impact on Philipp und Keuntje

For PUK, the loss of Astra as a client is significant. The agency, founded in January 1999, is now part of the Fischer-Appelt Group. Its client roster includes major brands such as Audi, Deutsche Bank, Jägermeister, and Netto. Nevertheless, Astra was the client with whom the agency became particularly closely associated, making this split a notable event in the German advertising landscape.

The ‘Was dagegen?’ campaign and the red heart anchor became cultural touchstones, reflecting a unique blend of Hamburg’s gritty charm and a rebellious spirit. The end of this long-standing creative partnership signals a new chapter for both Astra and Philipp und Keuntje, as they each move forward to define their future identities and collaborations.
