Berlin to Become Safer for Queer People with New State Strategy
Berlin, March 25 – The Berlin Senate has officially adopted a comprehensive “Berlin State Strategy for Queer Safety and Against Queerphobia,” a 50-page document outlining numerous measures designed to enhance the protection and safety of queer individuals across the city. This initiative comes in response to a notable increase in anti-queer crimes and related violent offenses reported in the past year.
Key Measures and Initiatives
The strategy, developed with input from over 400 individuals, focuses on several critical areas. According to the Senate Department for Diversity, a primary goal is to provide better protection in locations previously identified as dangerous for queer people, such as parks and specific meeting points. One proposed measure includes the installation of emergency telephone boxes in these vulnerable areas.
Additionally, the strategy mandates improved security protocols for major events and smaller gatherings frequented by the queer community. It also emphasizes the importance of raising awareness and providing specialized training for police and security personnel to effectively address and prevent queerphobic incidents.
Local Support and Online Protection
To further support the queer community, the Senate plans to establish contact points in every district, offering a wide range of services to combat discrimination. A specialist unit dedicated to tackling online queerphobia is also slated for creation, addressing the growing issue of digital hate speech and harassment.
In a move towards greater inclusivity, new school buildings in Berlin will be designed to incorporate gender-neutral showers and toilets. This reflects a broader commitment to creating safe and affirming environments for all students.
Berlin Leads the Way in Queer Safety
Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD), responsible for Labour, Social Affairs, Equality, Integration, Diversity, and Anti-Discrimination, highlighted Berlin’s pioneering role in this area. “With today’s decision, we are sending a clear message. The city-wide strategy for queer safety and against queerphobia permanently enshrines protection and safety for queer people in Berlin,” explained Kiziltepe.
She further emphasized that this strategy will strengthen Berlin’s reputation as a diverse and inclusive city, aiming to ensure it “becomes noticeably safer and remains a city worth living in for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer people.”
Alfonso Pantisano, Berlin’s Queer Commissioner, echoed this sentiment, stating, “With the state strategy, we are protecting the rights and everyday lives of queer people in a more targeted way – and thereby always our democracy as well.”
Addressing Rising Anti-Queer Crimes
The urgency of this strategy is underscored by recent statistics. The document cites 588 anti-queer incidents in 2023, including 127 violent offenses, demonstrating a sharp rise in such crimes. This alarming trend has prompted the Senate to take decisive action to safeguard its queer residents.
Berlin is the first federal state in Germany to adopt such a comprehensive and participatory strategy, setting a precedent for other regions to follow in protecting their diverse communities.
