Berliners Offered Free Grit to Combat Slippery Conditions
Berlin, February 1, 2026 – In response to the persistent winter weather, Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR), the city’s municipal waste management company, has begun offering grit free of charge to residents. This initiative aims to assist the public in maintaining safe pavements and private properties during the ongoing icy conditions.
Accessing Free Grit: Locations and Limitations
Berlin residents are invited to visit ten designated BSR depots across the city to collect grit for their private use. They are required to bring their own buckets or other containers, and quantities are limited to household amounts, specifically up to ten litres per person, while stocks last. This measure is designed to support individual efforts in preventing slips and falls on icy surfaces.
The BSR depots participating in this program are open on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Key locations include the depot in Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain, the depot in Lengeder Straße in Reinickendorf, and the depot on Ostpreußendamm in Lichterfelde. Residents are advised that BSR does not provide transport for the collected grit.
Distinction from De-icing Agents and BSR’s Own Operations
