Berlin, August 6 – A new memorial site has been established in the Tiergarten to commemorate the victims of the Islamist terrorist attack that occurred on the outskirts of Christopher Street Day (CSD). A new maple tree has been planted to replace the one that had to be cut down following the car attack, and a rainbow-colored bench has been installed next to it.
Memorial at the Scene of the Attack
The new maple tree, located at the crime scene near the Brandenburg Gate, is surrounded by a protective metal fence. This fence allows people to attach cards, photos, flowers, and personal messages without damaging the tree. The Mitte District Office stated that the rainbow-colored bench is intended to invite people to pause, offer silent condolences, and express solidarity with the queer community.
Details of the Attack
The terrorist attack took place on July 25, when an Islamist assailant drove a van into a crowd of people. The vehicle then crashed into a tree. The 21-year-old attacker subsequently assaulted additional individuals, reportedly with a machete, before fleeing the scene. The attack resulted in the death of one woman and left 31 people injured, some seriously. The attacker was later shot and killed by police in Berlin-Spandau one day after the incident, during an attempt to arrest him.
Tiergarten as a Place of Remembrance
Following the attack, people left flowers, wreaths, messages of condolence, and other tributes at several locations near the Brandenburg Gate. To this day, many individuals visit the Tiergarten to process the tragic event and to honor the victims. The CSD memorial is situated at the site of the incident, specifically near Bellevueallee and Ahornsteig.
