Berlin Launches Central Help Center After Major Cyberattack

Berlin, September 12, 2026 – The state of Berlin has established a central point of contact for citizens affected by a significant cyberattack that resulted in the widespread publication of data from the city’s administration. This new service aims to provide information and assistance to those whose data may have been compromised.

Comprehensive Support for Affected Individuals

The Senatskanzlei (Senate Chancellery) announced the creation of this new resource. Citizens can direct their inquiries to the email address [email protected]. Additionally, the official state portal, berlin.de, now features an information page specifically designed for residents who believe they may be affected by the illegal data publication.

This dedicated online resource offers crucial background information regarding the cyberattack, practical behavioral guidelines, and a comprehensive ‘Questions and Answers’ (FAQ) section. The information page will be regularly updated to ensure citizens have access to the latest details and advice.

Specific Contact Points for Targeted Administrations

The cyberattack primarily impacted two key Senate Administrations: the Senate Department for Transport and Environment, and the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building, and Housing. To address specific concerns related to these departments, citizens can use the following dedicated email addresses:

Details of the Cyberattack

The cyberattack on parts of Berlin’s administrative data network became public on August 14. The hacker group ‘Rhysida’ claimed responsibility, attempting to extort the state for 30 Bitcoins, equivalent to approximately two million euros. The Senate refused to pay the ransom, leading the cybercriminals to publish at least 1.2 million data records on the darknet after their ultimatum expired. The darknet is a part of the internet not easily accessible without specific software, often used for illicit activities.

This incident has highlighted the vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures within public administrations. The establishment of this help center is a direct response to the widespread concern among Berlin’s residents regarding their personal data.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the attack, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available. The focus remains on supporting affected citizens and strengthening the city’s defenses against future cyber threats.
