Berlin, August 29 – The railway line connecting Berlin and Hamburg will experience another overnight closure this weekend. Deutsche Bahn announced that the closure is necessary to perform “optimizations and rectify remaining defects in the infrastructure” following the extensive general renovation of the route.
Overnight Closure for Final Adjustments
The closure is scheduled to begin on Saturday evening at 9:10 PM and is expected to be lifted by Sunday morning at 11:00 AM. Deutsche Bahn stated that the measure is planned “outside of peak travel times” to minimize inconvenience. Nevertheless, passengers are advised to anticipate disruptions to their journeys.
During the closure, several long-distance and freight trains will be rerouted. For regional services, a replacement bus service will be implemented. Travelers are strongly encouraged to check for updated information regarding the impact of the closures before their departure.
Extensive Renovation Completed in June 2026
The Berlin-Hamburg railway line underwent a comprehensive renovation from August 2025 to June 2026. The initial plan was to complete the renovation and lift the full closure by April 30, 2026. However, the project experienced a delay of approximately one and a half months, which Deutsche Bahn attributed to frost conditions at the beginning of the year. The first section of the line was reopened in mid-May.
Currently, trains between Hamburg and Berlin are once again operating at speeds of up to 230 km/h. This upcoming overnight closure is intended to address any outstanding work and ensure the line operates at its optimal capacity.
