Berlin police have announced the establishment of four firework-free zones and a weapons and knife prohibition zone for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations. These regulations, effective from 6 pm on New Year’s Eve until 6 am on New Year’s Day, are detailed in general decrees published in the Official Gazette for Berlin on December 23.
New Restricted Zone at Admiralbrücke Among Four Firework-Free Areas
A new restricted zone has been designated at Admiralbrücke in Kreuzberg, where fireworks are prohibited for the first time. This ban extends to adjacent side streets and the playground on the central reservation of Grimmstraße. In addition to Admiralbrücke, the established firework-free zones include Alexanderplatz, the Steinmetzkiez neighbourhood in Schöneberg, and a section of Sonnenallee, consistent with previous years’ measures.
Within these firework-free zones, only category F1 pyrotechnic articles are permitted. This includes items such as sparklers, firecrackers, and table fireworks. The aim of these restrictions is to reduce the risk of injury and property damage associated with the use of more powerful fireworks in densely populated areas.
Weapons and Knife Ban Around Brandenburg Gate Celebration Area
Complementing the firework restrictions, a comprehensive weapons and knife ban zone will be enforced around the New Year’s Eve celebration area at the Brandenburg Gate and Straße des 17. Juni. This expanded zone encompasses the Großer Tiergarten park and sections of the Hansaviertel and government district.
From 6 pm on December 31 until 6 am on January 1, the carrying of any weapons or knives, including common household items such as kitchen knives, is strictly prohibited within this designated area. This measure is intended to ensure the safety of attendees at the large-scale New Year’s Eve event and to prevent potential conflicts.
Broader Safety Measures and Context
These New Year’s Eve safety measures are part of a broader effort by Berlin authorities to manage public order and safety during holiday periods. The police’s announcement comes as the city also prepares for other logistical challenges, including public transport schedules and emergency services provision.
For instance, Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has issued a Christmas message thanking volunteers, highlighting the spirit of “Humanity in action.” Additionally, emergency clinics will remain open during public holidays, and public transport services will operate on adjusted timetables.
In a related development, Berlin is delivering 3,000 bodycams to its police and fire brigade, which will be worn across the board for the first time this New Year’s Eve. These cameras are intended to deter violence against emergency personnel and enhance transparency during incidents.
The city is also addressing social issues during the holidays, with various offers against loneliness and emergency aid for homeless individuals, including cold weather buses and shelters. These initiatives underscore a comprehensive approach to public welfare and safety during the festive season.
The implementation of these zones and bans reflects ongoing strategies to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve for all residents and visitors in Berlin.
