Berlin Activates ‘Warmth Network’ Amidst Cold Weather
Berlin, February 4 – As winter temperatures continue to grip the German capital, Berlin has opened its doors to residents seeking refuge from the cold. A network of public facilities, including libraries and community centers, is offering warm, consumption-free spaces for people to escape the chill without incurring any costs.
The initiative, dubbed the ‘Warmth Network’ (Netzwerk der Wärme), aims to provide accessible and welcoming environments for various groups, including families, seniors, and the homeless. This comes as a significant winter storm impacts parts of the US, leaving hundreds of thousands without power, and following a recent power outage in Berlin’s southwest due to an arson attack on the city’s power grid, which briefly disrupted S-Bahn services.
Libraries as Havens of Warmth
Among the key locations in the ‘Warmth Network’ are the two branches of the Central and State Library (Zentral- und Landesbibliothek). Milena Jovanović, a spokesperson for the library, highlighted their role in the initiative: “People can visit us without an entrance fee or an ID. We are a consumption-free zone.” She noted that the salon at the America Memorial Library is particularly popular, offering a comfortable space for reading newspapers and relaxing.
Extensive Network of Support
The ‘Warmth Network’ is a comprehensive alliance of places designed for exchange, assistance, and community engagement across Berlin. It lists 155 facilities specifically catering to the homeless, in addition to day centers, numerous other libraries, and local community clubs (Kiezklubs).
In January, the district of Treptow-Köpenick explicitly drew attention to its eleven municipal Kiezklubs, which are available during the day as warm spaces for all interested individuals within the district.
City’s Commitment to Community Well-being
This initiative underscores Berlin’s commitment to supporting its residents during challenging weather conditions and fostering a sense of community. By providing these accessible and free-of-charge warm spaces, the city aims to mitigate the adverse effects of the cold, particularly for its most vulnerable citizens.
The ‘Warmth Network’ serves as a vital resource, ensuring that everyone has a safe and comfortable place to stay warm during the winter months, reflecting a proactive approach to public welfare and social solidarity.
