Berlin, September 2, 2026 – Ten years after its inception, Berlin’s ambitious School Construction Initiative has been lauded as a significant success by the Berlin Senate. The program has resulted in the creation of approximately 62,000 new school seats and a substantial investment exceeding seven billion euros, transforming the educational landscape of the German capital.

A Decade of Growth and Modernization in Berlin’s Schools

The positive assessment was delivered during a celebratory event held this morning at the newly constructed Heinrich-Hertz-Gymnasium in Friedrichshain. The occasion marked a decade of dedicated efforts to address the growing demand for educational facilities and to modernize existing ones across the city.

According to figures released by the education authorities, the initiative has overseen the construction of 41 new school buildings and 76 new gymnasiums. In addition to these new constructions, numerous existing facilities have undergone extensive expansion and renovation, ensuring that Berlin’s students have access to contemporary learning environments.

Senator Günther-Wünsch Emphasizes Modern Learning Environments

Katharina Günther-Wünsch, Senator for Education, underscored the core philosophy driving the initiative. “We want schools that are in step with the times-places where children and young people can learn and develop to the best of their ability, and where educators find good conditions for their demanding work,” stated Senator Günther-Wünsch. She further elaborated on the comprehensive vision for these educational spaces: “This includes modern learning environments as well as quality full-day programs, inclusion, physical activity, and spaces for interaction and collaboration.”

Record Student Enrollment Drives Continued Investment

The necessity of the School Construction Initiative is further highlighted by the continuous increase in student enrollment across Berlin. The program was initially launched in the 2016-2017 school year, responding to a growing demographic trend. Just last week, at the start of the current school year, Berlin reported a record number of nearly 405,000 students, signaling an ongoing demand for robust educational infrastructure.

In light of these demographic trends, Berlin is committed to pressing forward with the initiative. Future efforts will not solely focus on the construction of new schools and additions. A significant shift in strategy will place a greater emphasis on the extensive renovation and modernization of existing school buildings, ensuring that all students benefit from high-quality educational settings.

Future Focus: Renovation and Sustainability

The continued investment underscores Berlin’s commitment to providing equitable and high-quality education for all its residents. The shift towards renovating existing buildings also reflects a broader strategy to enhance sustainability and optimize the use of current resources, adapting older structures to meet modern pedagogical and environmental standards.

The success of the School Construction Initiative is a testament to Berlin’s proactive approach in addressing the evolving needs of its educational system, ensuring that the city remains a place where young people can thrive and learn in environments conducive to their growth and development.
