Berlin-Süd Riding and Driving Association Receives ‘Swallow-Friendly House’ Award

Berlin, July 23, 2026 – The Reit- und Fahrgemeinschaft Berlin-Süd e.V., located in the heart of southern Berlin, is much more than just a place for horses and riders. It is a vibrant sanctuary for numerous wild animals, with the association particularly proud of its swallow population. Currently, six active swallow nests can be found in the stable aisles. A long-held belief among equestrians states, “If there are swallows in the stable, the stable climate is good.” The members eagerly anticipate the return of these birds each year, observing them as they raise their young.

In recognition of their efforts, the Reit- und Fahrgemeinschaft Berlin-Süd e.V. today received the “Swallow-Friendly House” award from NABU Berlin. This plaque is presented to property owners who tolerate swallow nests on their buildings and actively encourage their settlement.

“We are delighted with this award because it shows that our work for nature conservation, which is so close to our hearts, is being recognized,” said Tanja Wolff, second chairwoman of the association. “We are proud and happy to provide a habitat for many different species of wild animals on our farm and thus make a valuable contribution to species protection!”

Beyond swallows, other birds such as sparrows and finches have also made the farm their home, regularly utilizing the provided nesting sites. Squirrels, hedgehogs, foxes, and countless insects thrive in the naturalistic areas, which feature deadwood hedges, hedgehog and insect hotels, and bird baths with fresh water. The Reit- und Fahrgemeinschaft Berlin-Süd e.V. aims to be a role model for other associations, businesses, and private individuals, demonstrating through their commitment that even simple measures can create valuable habitats for birds and other wildlife.
