Berlin, July 14, 2026 – The Berlin police force is slated to acquire a new Forensic Institute (KTI), a project valued at 190 million euros. The facility will be constructed in Johannisthal, at Groß-Berliner Damm 78, according to an announcement by Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD).

New Institute Crucial for Modern Crime Fighting

“The new building is essential for modern crime fighting and security in the capital,” stated Senator Spranger. The current KTI building, situated on Tempelhofer Damm in Tempelhof, is no longer adequate to meet the demanding requirements of forensic work. Its laboratory capacities and technical infrastructure have become insufficient, making the new construction a pressing necessity.

Funding from Federal Infrastructure Special Fund

The funding for this significant project will be drawn from the Federal Infrastructure Special Fund. This investment underscores the commitment to equipping Berlin’s police with state-of-the-art resources to combat crime effectively.

Addressing Outdated Infrastructure

The decision to build a new institute comes as a direct response to the limitations of the existing facility. The current KTI has struggled to keep pace with advancements in forensic science and the increasing complexity of criminal investigations. The new institute is expected to provide expanded laboratory space, cutting-edge equipment, and improved technical capabilities, all of which are vital for conducting thorough and precise forensic analyses.

Enhanced Capabilities for Berlin Police

With the new KTI, the Berlin police will gain enhanced capabilities in various areas of forensic investigation, including but not limited to DNA analysis, ballistics, digital forensics, and toxicology. These advancements are anticipated to significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of criminal investigations, leading to quicker resolutions and a higher rate of successful prosecutions.

Impact on Public Safety

The establishment of a modern forensic institute is expected to have a direct positive impact on public safety in Berlin. By strengthening the police’s ability to gather and analyze evidence, the city aims to deter criminal activity and ensure a more secure environment for its residents. The institute will serve as a cornerstone in Berlin’s strategy for maintaining law and order and adapting to evolving criminal challenges.

Long-Term Vision for Security

This 190-million-euro investment is part of a broader long-term vision to bolster Berlin’s security infrastructure. It reflects a proactive approach to crime prevention and investigation, recognizing the critical role that advanced forensic science plays in contemporary policing. The new KTI is poised to become a central hub for forensic expertise, fostering collaboration and innovation within the police force and with external scientific bodies.

The project is a testament to Berlin’s commitment to providing its law enforcement agencies with the best possible tools and resources to protect its citizens and uphold justice.
