Berlin to Host International Building Exhibition from 2034 to 2037
Berlin, March 25, 2026 – The city of Berlin is preparing to host the International Building Exhibition (IBA) from 2034 to 2037, a major undertaking approved by the CDU-SPD Senate. This initiative aims to position Berlin as a leading hub for sustainable urban development, showcasing innovative projects to a global audience.
Senator for Urban Development, Christian Gaebler (SPD), highlighted that the IBA will focus on implementing projects that serve as models for future urban development. These projects are expected to address critical areas such as climate protection, climate adaptation, and the sustainable management of urban land. The culmination of these efforts will be presented to a broad national and international audience between 2034 and 2037.
Establishment of a New State-Owned Company for IBA Implementation
To ensure the successful execution of the IBA, Berlin is establishing a dedicated state-owned company. This entity will be responsible for the preparation and curation of the exhibition, as well as overseeing projects through all stages of implementation. A board of trustees, comprising experts from various fields including urban planning, architecture, environmental and climate protection, sustainability, mobility, digital technology, and social affairs, will support the new company.
Gaebler emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, stating, “We want to position Berlin nationally and internationally as a hub for sustainable urban development.” He further elaborated on the key areas of focus for the IBA, which include “the sensitive development of existing neighbourhoods, the conversion of underused spaces and buildings, and new construction on sites previously used for other purposes.”
